2024 marks the anniversary of two major events: the end of apartheid in South Africa 30 years ago, and the Berlin Conference 140 years ago. On this occasion, students of the Master’s programme in Museum Management and Communication at HTW Berlin are developing the exhibition “1884/85 – 1994: 110 Years of Anticolonial Resistance | The Struggle: South Africans in Exile in Berlin”.

From the Battle of Salt River (1510) in what is now Cape Town to concerts by Miriam Makeba in the western and eastern parts of a divided Berlin, it highlights resistance in southern Africa, colonial policies “made in Berlin”, and music as a means of protest against colonialism and apartheid.

Live music will accompany this prologue to the special exhibition in the Museum Ephraim-Palais held in the evening of 17 October.
