The 140th anniversary of the Berlin Conference of 1884/85 falls on November 15, 2024. The “Dekoloniale Berlin Conference 2024” will critically examine the legacy of this conference and its ongoing impact. Representatives from Africa and the global diaspora will come together at the Dekoloniale Berlin Conference 2024 to discuss the reverberations of this historic event.
We invited 19 experts from politics, science, art, and civil society from countries that were and continue to be affected by the political positions of the 19 Western powers represented at the 1884/85 conference.
The event sheds light on the complex relationships between former colonizers (today’s EU member states, as well as the European-colonial-founded USA, Brazil, and Caribbean states) and their former colonies, particularly in the context of migration, trade, and cultural and historical interdependencies.
