After years of campaigning by African and Black communities to rename three streets in the Afrikanisches Viertel, the quarter which was once a memorial of colonial propaganda, has been transformed.
The exhibition section “Paths of Remembrance” in the project “Dekoloniale – what remains?!” explores the change in our memory culture which is marked by the renaming of these streets. These streets now honor African resistance fighters instead of colonial criminals.
Mnyaka Sururu Mboro, co-founder of Berlin Postkolonial, leads tours through the district, exploring how renaming streets has transformed our culture of remembering. The focus is on the new namesakes like Rudolph and Emily Duala Manga Bell, Cornelius Fredericks, Anna Mungunda and the Maji Maji warriors.
