Due to its visual appearance, Punk, the small, urban movement, attracted attention in East Berlin from the end of the 1970s. What was considered a provocation in the West was an attack on the state in the GDR and was fought against. The exhibition in the room “Free Space” at BERLIN GLOBAL tells the story of this youth subculture between rebellion, persecution and persistence.

The theme area leads visitors into the church space, which the punks were able to conquer; their bands played concerts here. Some of the most famous punk songs – “Nazis again in East Berlin” by Namenlos or “We always want to be good” by Feeling B – can be heard. East Berlin punks were just as rebellious as their counterparts in the West, but their existence was constantly threatened and they secured their survival in niches.

Planlos

Planlos was founded in 1980 in the “shadow of the wall” as one of the first punk bands in the GDR. The founding of the East Berlin band was the result of the liberating tumult of punk in the GDR’s order state. The band’s lyrics were politically explicit, but at the same time captivated by a haunting poetry. Planlos’ songs are among the classics of GDR punk rock; songs and lyrics are recorded in the logbook of GDR subculture. Hardly any other band embodied the charisma of the East Berliner punks to such an extent.

Since July 2022, Planlos has been live again with their original singer Michael “Pankow” Boehlke and the original lyricist and guitarist Micha Kobs. Bassist Maik Reichenbach is now part of the band. Reichenbach was a founding member of the legendary Leipzig punk band L’Attentat. Planlos and L’Attentat share a common history and a decades-long friendship and alliance. With the current guitarist Stefan Mißfeld and drummer Hans Frithjof Tismar, Planlos also shifts the weight from the past to the present; both musicians come from the West of Germany and have been playing in various bands for years.

The event is held in German.
